Tight end Antonio Gates has signed a five-year extension that puts him under contract through 2015. Terms were not disclosed. "Antonio is a special player and person. He is everything we are looking for in a Chargers player," general manager A.J. Smith said. "His talent and contributions to our team speak for themselves. His work ethic and desire to be the best are unmatched. He has been a major part of the success we have had over the past several years, and we are thrilled he will continue to be with us for years to come." Antonio Gates has caught plenty of big passes for the San Diego Chargers, and on Wednesday he hauled in the biggest contract ever given to an NFL tight end. Gates agreed to a $36.175 million, five-year contract extension, with $20.4 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the deal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the figures weren't released.

The San Diego Chargers say Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson has been suspended by the NFL for the first three games of the 2010 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Jackson pleaded guilty in February to his second drunk driving charge since 2006. The suspension could be moot.
