Boris Diaw arrived at his favorite Salt Lake City coffeehouse expecting to meet fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert, and just smirked when told Gobert was running late. The two have a big brother-little brother relationship, a bond many international players seek. ''For me it's been better, for sure,'' Gobert said of Diaw's arrival in Utah.

Magic Johnson is coming back to the Lakers. Less than three weeks after the announcement of his return to the Los Angeles Lakers as an adviser in ?all areas of basketball and business,? Magic Johnson has now assumed control of the organization?s on-court arm, ascending to the role of president of basketball operations and prompting the ouster of longtime general manager Mitch Kupchak and executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss ? the son of former Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, and the brother of team president and governor Jeanie Buss.

If anyone has a damaged hand on the pulse on what makes the Sacramento Kings click, or cluck, it?s longtime play by play broadcaster and sports talk radio host Grant Napear. The Kings went through two ownership groups, three sets of general managers and six coaches and an ungodly amount of teammates during DeMarcus Cousins? 2010-through-2017 reign, but only one play-by-play guy slash sports talk radio host.

Paul Millsap knows how to make an entrance. NEW ORLEANS ? When the Eastern Conference All-Stars took the floor for Saturday?s practice session at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the first player introduced was Paul Millsap of the Atlanta Hawks. Music blaring, public address announcer yawping, dancers gyrating ? and Paul Millsap, stone-faced, walks through it at an unhurried pace as fans offer a polite, respectful, muted pop.

Glenn Robinson III is the NBA's new dunk king, with an assist to Indiana teammate Paul George, the Pacers' mascot and a Pacers cheerleader. Robinson leaped over all three, snagging the ball from George along the way before finishing with an emphatic, two-hand, reverse jam, giving him a perfect score - and the title - on his final dunk. Robinson edged out Phoenix's Derrick Jones Jr., who was done in by his failure to complete his difficult first dunk of two in the final round.

Indiana Pacers forward Robinson jumped over teammate Paul George, the club's mascot and a Pacer cheerleader to easily win the contest over Phoenix Suns rookie Derrick Jones. The Los Angeles Clippers' DeAndre Jordan and the Orlando Magic's Aaron Gordon were eliminated in the earlier rounds.

Glenn Robinson III of the Indiana Pacers is the All-Star slam dunk champion. Robinson beat Derrick Jones Jr. of the Phoenix Suns in the final round. Jones failed to go over three people - or rather, one man, one Suns dancer and Suns' mascot The Gorilla - and get a dunk down in his first attempt of the finals, yet got 37 points.

Kristaps Porzingis has the entire package. The NBA has happened upon something interesting with its ?Bigs? vs. ?Guards? format to the league?s Skills Challenge. Kristaps Porzingis, who stands over 7-1, has taken the 2017 version of the competition, defending the Bigs? honor after Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns won the event in 2016.

The NBA All-Star break, despite some recent alterations, is hardly a break. Whether you?re in the actual All-Star Game proper or any number of the NBA?s sideshow events, there will be a microphone in your face and a suggestion to detail how, exactly, everything has gone wrong with the team you left behind in order to come to New Orleans.

Karl-Anthony Towns enjoys hearing about Devin Booker?s plans to interface with influencers. NEW ORLEANS ? OK, let?s be honest: the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge is not the biggest draw of NBA All-Star Weekend. Sure, it?s fun to watch some of the best and most exciting first- and second-year players in the league strut their stuff in a defense-optional, highlight-hopeful contest featuring plenty of springs and no shortage of youthful exuberance.

Klay Thompson had one of his red-hot stretches in the third quarter vs. Sacramento. The Golden State Warriors have famously not lost back-to-back regular season games since April 2015, a run that stood at an NBA-record 141 games heading into Wednesday?s home contest against the Sacramento Kings. While the Warriors? three-straight losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers in June?s NBA Finals certainly tempers the enthusiasm over this streak, it?s hard to deny a record that has obliterated the previous high of 97 games in a row without back-to-back losses (set by the Utah Jazz in the late ?90s).

Before heading off to play with the All-Stars, Giannis Antetokounmpo got a reminder of how good it feels to play with Khris Middleton. Antetokounmpo scored 33 points in his final game before his All-Star debut, Middleton had his strongest performance since returning from a ruptured left hamstring and the Milwaukee Bucks sent the Brooklyn Nets to the break on a 14-game skid with a 129-125 victory Wednesday night. Back-to-back one-sided home losses left Utah searching for answers heading into Wednesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers -- the team's final game before the NBA All-Star break. In their latest loss, an 88-72 setback to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, the Jazz scored a season-low in points and shot a season-low 32.2 percent from the field. The NBA Development League is changing its name starting next season to the NBA Gatorade League, a deal that will include a rebranding that will affect the league logo, basketballs, jerseys, on-court signage and digital properties. Long viewed as a proving and testing ground of sorts for the NBA, what has been known as the D-League will also get to take advantage of Gatorade's Sports Science Institute - a resource that many elite athletes, including Dwyane Wade and Cam Newton, have used in recent years for testing and evaluation of what exactly their bodies need during competition. ''This isn't about slapping a name on a league,'' NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said.

Don?t tell, well, just about every other professional sports team. For the second time this season, the Utah Jazz have bucked both an NBA and pro sports trend by thinking community and value-first in the face of what could have been a deluge of deals meant to line pockets. Just after announcing that the basketball team would stay in Salt Lake City for as long as there will be a Salt Lake City (nearly two centuries and counting), the Utah Jazz have decided to flip their potential jersey patch ad revenue into charitable coffers.

If Doc Rivers had any advice for Steve Kerr, it would probably be to forget about Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry at the All-Star Game. Rivers said his strategy when he coached the midseason game was to make sure the guys who could beat him later weren't mad at him, even at the expense of playing time for his own players. ''I made sure they loved me, the other ones,'' Rivers said.

The Jazz offense went from sizzling to ice cold at the wrong time in a 112-105 overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. The Jazz aren't the only team trying to put a disappointing defeat behind them when they host the Boston Celtics on Saturday. Things also took a wrong turn for Boston in a 108-92 loss to Sacramento on Thursday night.
